Gitchi Misawedamowinan

This program has NOT started yet for the 2011-2012 school year.

"Gitchi Misawedamowinan" (kitchi mis-wayn-damowin) is Ojibway and translates to "looking for wonderful successes" or "having great expectations" of those who attend this program.

Brief History:  On November 1, 2010, the Seven Oaks Parents in Support of Aboriginal Education passed tobacco to Mary Courchene, Elder in Residence for 7 Oaks School Division, to provide a name for an exciting new initiative for 7 Oaks students.

This is a new opportunity for students to experience a student centered approach to learning in a unique setting, with unique resources.  The creation of a registration & intake process, and identifying program goals have been the main focus of the initial weeks.

GOALS:

  • To incorporate Aboriginal Teachings into the youth's experience so that they can fulfill their dreams & achieve their goals.
  • To provide a safe environment for the student who may not be thriving in the traditional classroom.
  • To facilitate the youth's discovery of their personal gifts, strengths, and talents.
  • To build self-esteem and pride.
  • To promote the realization that the youth's contributions are valuable.
  • To enable the youth to become a proud member of the community.
  • To promote identity and self-confidence to that the youth will gain the desire to complete their education.
