Rebecca Chartrand is a proud member of Pine Creek First Nations, with strong Anishinaabe, Inninew and Metis roots. She has worked in education for the past 20 years demonstrating a commitment and ability to grow strong healthy communities through her daily efforts as the Division Team Lead for Aboriginal Education. Rebecca maintains strong community involvement through grassroots and volunteer efforts sitting on various boards and community organizations. In Seven Oaks she worked to establish a strong internal infrastrure bringing Seven Oaks School Division to the forefront of Aboriginal education.
Since assuming her role as Division Team Lead for Aboriginal Education she lead the division through a strategic planning process which she rolled into Seven Oaks Aboriginal education policy. Since then all stakeholders have been working to achieve the goals outlined int he policy. She offers professional development, programming, training and leadership opportunities for staff, students and partners.
She is a forward thinking Indigenous educator who has received a number of awards for her leadership, innovation, bridge-building, and results, including the Canadian Race Relations Awards for Excellence in Education which she received while she was serving as Executive co-chair for the Aboriginal Circle of Educators; the National Indspire Award for Innovation in Education; Sustaining Our Ways Award with the Aboriginal Circle of Educators; The Urban Aboriginal Economic Development Award for her writing which unearthed and illuminated Anishinaabe pedagogy; the Governor General Award for Academic and a Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Achievement for community development.
She has been sought after for public service and is often the go-to resource person for many Aboriginal education initiatives. She has demonstrated her ability time again to start and grow new initiatives with determination and grace. She is a founder of CAEM, Council for Aboriginal Education in Manitoba, and also founded the Aboriginal Circle of Educators Annual Aboriginal Education Awards. Currently, Rebecca is the driver behind the Ojibwe bilingual school that will open in September 2016 in Seven Oaks School Division.
