A Bright Futures Program's aim is to provide you with every opportunity to successfully complete high school and explore all of your options for the future.
Taking Responsibility and Earning Respect
A Bright Futures Program requirements are very similar to those of a part time job. Being a student is recognized as a type of job. It only seems reasonable to offer all Bright Futures Students rewards and supports similar to what a person might experience with an after school job:
To participate in this program you will need to:
-
Participate 3 hours each week in school work support, or tutoring;
-
Participate 4 hours each month in group mentorship activities;
-
Maintain a average of 70% (including a 75% in Mathematics and English Language Arts);
-
Give back to the program and your community through Community Service (e.g. volunteering in a community centre or organization or helping with school and community events);
-
Your family must fall within a low income requirement
With homework supports and staff members there with you every step of the way you will achieve an average of 70% and earn the credits needed to graduate !
In Return for Your Commitment to the Program we will provide you with the following:
Long term incentive is a scholarship fund of $1000 / year held in trust to be used for post secondary education such as university or college (maximum = $4000 upon high school graduation).
Short term incentives may include transit tickets to get to school and the Bright Futures Program, fees associated with memberships and lessons that will help you to improve your skills and talents, etc. Each student is invited to earn and negotiate the incentives they need.
Student Parent Support Workers (SPSW)
whose job it is to work with you towards high school success (e.g. organize tutors to help you with specific homework challenges, introduce you to
community members who will assist you in exploring job or career areas of interest to you, etc.)
A
place to study and complete school work
that is away from school and home. As soon as each site is ready all afterschool program components will be located at these sites
.
Bright Futures Program staff currently are contacting students and families in the Elwick Village and Watson Street program catchment areas. Two sites have been chosen provincially as starting places for this new program: Elwick Village/130-140 Watson Street and Lord Selkirk Park. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept students outside the postal codes identified for these areas.
