Volunteers

Needed:

Adults able to tutor grade 9 students

We need your knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to build a strong tutoring program for low income high school students in the Lord Selkirk Park and Elwick Village areas of Winnipeg. This tutoring component will be an integral part of our new program’s central goal to encourage and support student success in school. The program is growing through a partnershipbetween the Seven Oaks School Division, Winnipeg School Division, Community Education Development Association (CEDA), and Mount Carmel Clinic. It is being jointly funded by the Province of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Foundation and the partner school divisions.

Students participating in this new program will be required to engage in 3 hours of compulsory tutoring each week and maintain a 70% grade average in their high schoolstudies. In order to support the program requirements and the students’ needs we require ateam of student-centred volunteer educators interested in helping students build study skills, reinforce content area knowledge and skills, and assist students with daily homework challenges.

A Tutor’s knowledge and skills should include an expertise in at least one of the grade 9 core subjects: Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts or Social Studies. Dependingon students’ needs we may require tutors able to work with students in other subject areas (French,Computer Studies, etc).

Tutoring sessions will be scheduled outside regular school hours (weekdays 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.; weekends1 p.m. – 3 p.m.). We would appreciate a commitment of 2 hours / week beginning in October,2008. The tutoring schedule will coincide with the regular school year; however, our volunteer schedule will be flexible enough to accommodate your other seasonal plans and commitments.
