Garden City Collegiate is a school that has an enrolment of approximately 960 students and 80 staff. Our physical site consists of two separate buildings that function as one school. Students take classes in both buildings regardless of their grade level. Our outdoor track and tennis courts are used not only for our physical education classes, but are also used by our students and community members during the early morning, evening and weekends.
The school is well known for its high academic standards in all areas including Physical Education, the Arts (Band, Drama, Choir, Visual Arts), Technology, and Technology and Applied Arts. More that 250 students are involved in Music Programs. Garden City Collegiate is the Division’s only dual track high school, offering programs in both French Immersion and English. There are also thriving Spanish, German and Basic French Programs. All students are required to engage in volunteer work as part of their four-year high school experience. Leadership opportunities for students are available through Student Council, Phys. Ed. Leadership and other special interest groups. A wide variety of intra- and inter-scholastic sports are also offered with an active and exciting intramural program.
Our student body is comprised of diverse personalities who possess skills and talents that are just as unique as they are. At Garden City Collegiate, the motto behind the programs and courses is “participation and excellence”. All of our 950-plus students are encouraged to take an active role in their educational experience through meeting course expectations, volunteering for school activities, representing our school at community activities, athletic events or student conferences, or initiating new activities to benefit our school and community. The staff supports them by planning and coordinating club activities and coaching inter-scholastic teams. We offer a full compliment of programs that are flourishing with incredible student participation and commitment. Whether it’s joining the Winnipeg’s Youth in Philanthropy program, or taking part in our Talent Shows, Ski Trips, Badminton, or Juggling – there is a place for every student to get involved.
Academically, students are offered a wide variety of learning opportunities from Senior 1 to Senior 4. In Seven Oaks School Division, education is an active, life-long process where lessons are taught through interaction and observation. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas, insights and knowledge as teachers develop innovative approaches to teaching that capture attention and encourage intellectual discussion. Students can take advantage of a wide-variety of courses that will support their goals beyond high school. Bursaries and scholarships are offered to students. Innovative programs such as First Year Now – a program enabling students to take college and university courses without the tuition – offer opportunities to explore interests. A well-rounded education helps students become well-rounded people with fulfilling lives.
At Garden City Collegiate, “Participation and Excellence” is the basis of our programs and provides students with skills that encourage responsible participation in society and personal excellence in chosen endeavours.
