The Grade Seven band is comprised of students in their second year in band. The Grade Seven band contains full middle years instrumentation which can include flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, bass and percussion. The Grade Seven band program continues where the Grade Six program left off, so students generally continue on the instrument that they played in the Grade Six band. The basic program for all Grade Seven band students includes skill development through the use of a method book and performance opportunities with standard concert band arrangements. Grade Seven band students meet three classes per cycle as a band, and once a cycle in a sectional. There is a continued emphasis on listening skills in addition to further development of musical skills.
The Grade Seven band traditionally performs at a school concert each year. We have also gone to the Manitoba Band Association's Beginning Band Festival. There also may be other opportunities for performance throughout the school year. Our uniform for Grade Seven and Grade Eight band includes black pants, socks and shoes as well as a white wing-tip shirt (i.e. a tuxedo shirt). A black bowtie and cummerbund is provided by the school.
Students who play similar instruments have one sectional per cycle in their timetable. Here we can develop understanding of concepts and execution of skills which are particular to their instrument. In this setting more specific skills and concepts can be introduced and developed
Assessment and evaluation continue as they did in the Grade Six band program. Playing tests are assessed according to the rubric that students have been given. Monthly practice calendars, signed by parents, are part of your report card mark.
