Grade Eight Band

The Grade Eight band is comprised of students in their third year in band. The Grade Eight band contains full middle years instrumentation which can include flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, bass and percussion. The Grade Eight band program continues where the Grade Seven program left off with students remaining on the instrument that they played in the Grade Seven program. The basic program for all Grade Eight band students includes skill development through the use of a method book and performance opportunities. Students in the Grade Eight band students meet three classes per cycle as a band, and once a cycle in a sectional. There is a continued emphasis on listening skills in addition to further development of musical skills.

Performances

The Grade Eight band traditionally performs at a school concert each year. We have also gone to the Manitoba Band Association's Optimist Band Festival and the Springfest Band Festival in Regina. There also may be other opportunities for performance throughout the school year. Our uniform for Grade Seven and Grade Eight band includes black pants, socks and shoes as well as a white wing-tip shirt (i.e. a tuxedo shirt). A black bowtie and cummerbund is provided by the school.

Sectionals

Students who play similar instruments have one sectional per cycle in their timetable. Here we can develop understanding of concepts and execution of skills which are particular to their instrument. In this setting more specific skills and concepts can be introduced and developed

Assessment and Evaluation

As in Grade Seven, playing tests are assessed according to the rubric that students have been given.  Monthly practice calendars are also marked. Scales played by a Grade Eight flute player and sax player give you some idea of how you could sound. Try recording yourself.
