Kindergarten
The early childhood philosophy proposes that children learn best by doing and experiencing. Therefore, at West St. Paul, the Kindergarten children touch, explore, manipulate, wonder, experiment, imagine, discover, enjoy.......... . Through everyday play experiences, children learn a wealth of information and attitudes that will help him/her at school and beyond. Language development , mathematics, social, science, nutrition, art, physical education and music all form part of the curriculum. Special emphasis is placed on a personal safety program. A computer is also available on a daily basis to supplement and enrich the learning process. Children experience success and become proficient at many skills. They are continually encouraged and praised. Each child is considered a unique individual and special.
Support programs that are available at West St. Paul include:
1) The Early Identification screening that seeks to identify the special needs of individual students and provide for those needs,
2) Vision screening,
3) Hearing screening, and
4) The services and expertise of a Resource teacher, Guidance Counsellor, Speech Pathologist, Psychologist, and Social Worker are available to provide specialist assistance to children and families.

Computers
At West St. Paul everyone is seen as a computer user. Staff are encouraged to become computer literate and to teach their own classes in the computer lab. We do not believe in having a single expert running our programs.
The focus at West St. Paul is the computer as a tool. Students as young as grade two routinely write on the computer, create or modify graphics to illustrate their work, and publish their results.
In grades seven and eight, students present the results of their social studies and science research as stand-alone multi-media projects complete with animation, sound and video, or use the computer to provide multimedia support for oral presentations. The vehicle that we use for building multimedia projects is Power Point, a programming environment that allows students to practice logical thinking and problem solving skills while building polished, useful products. We also use digital cameras and computer software for photos, animations and movie editing.
We welcome the opportunity to exchange ideas on how computers can be used to enhance learning in the classroom. Schools wishing to share their experiences or engage in joint projects are encouraged to contact us.
