‚ÄčPlaywriting

‚ÄčIn this session students would explore the elements of playwriting. By the end of the session students would (as a group) complete the first draft of a short one act play. Though a variety of engaging activities and examples, the session would cover the following: What makes playwriting/theatrical production unique? How does it differ from screenwriting and prose writing? How to use plot structure to create engaging stories with interesting conflict and high stakes. How does our selected genre effect the way we write our play? How to develop interesting and diverse characters. How to write believable dialogue. How to handle your inner editor (the inner voice that tells us we aren‚Äôt capable of what we‚Äôre attempting to do) Students would work together to brainstorm and pitch ideas for a play. As a group, we would select an idea, develop plot, character and dialogue, and complete the first draft of a one act play. The session would conclude with a staged reading of their original work.

Close-Reading & Creative Writing

‚ÄčThis session will explore the reciprocal relationship between close-reading skills and creative output. We will do plenty of "writing beside master texts." Students will be expected to compose short, daily writing pieces. In addition to instruction, the sessions be buttressed by a writer's workshop format where students will be guided in offering feedback to each other. Students will also be encouraged to suggest writing pieces that they enjoy, for full class discussions. This session will draw upon two seminal texts of textual analysis and a variety of short-stories, poems, and excerpts from longer works. The guiding texts will be George Saunders' recently published, "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" and George Toles', "A House Made of Light."

‚Äč‚ÄčDesign-Build Programme‚Äč
‚ÄčThis session will be facilitated by Grey & Ivy Inc. The most valuable natural resource in the world is human innovation. It is an infinite source inspired by our own experiences and creativity and allows us to craft our dreams and visions into a reality for the betterment of our future. At Grey & Ivy, we aim to empower individuals and communities through the design and build process and utilize storytelling, immersive technologies, and construction practices as knowledge sharing tools. In this two-week course, you will explore the depths of your creativity by learning how to design your own tiny home while understanding how it connects to the environment around you. Our team is made up of architects, sustainability experts, immersive technology innovators, business folks, designers, as well as technical and academic researchers, and we are here to help guide you. Through the practice of storytelling, site exploration, drawing, physical and 3D model building, budget planning, architecture and construction drafting, you will be able identify connections between the design and build process and your own experiences and interests. These connections are what refer to as the Four Pillars of Sustainability, and you will explore and understand these connections over the course duration as you develop your own tiny house design booklet.‚Äč

‚ÄčElephant in the Room Engineering

‚ÄčEngineers take the knowledge we have and apply it to that they have acquired and apply it to solve problems. They do this in systematic way called the design process. In this course we will be working on challenges that enable us to work on defining the problem, doing research, developing solutions, building prototypes, testing it and then evaluating the solution. Students will work in teams to develop skills such as defining roles, cooperation, time management, and communication among others.

Students will build an ‚Äúthe elephant in the room.‚ÄĚ To do this they will select an issue is important but that people simply aren't paying enough attention to. Students will work in groups to build a 6 foot elephant out of cardboard and newspaper. They will work together to turn their elephant into a visual representation of their issue. Students will then use their elephant to make people aware of their issue (in the past students have received letters back from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Brian Pallister, among others).
