Manitoba 150: Think Historically
Provocation 1 -- Continuity & Change

When historians “do history” they often try to assess how things have changed over time and how they have remained the same. Have things changed quickly or substantially? Are the changes widespread throughout society? Or have some things just remained constant? These questions help us understand the human experience a bit better.

As part of Manitoba’s 150 years, Winnipeg has been a major part of its development. We have included five photos from the City of Winnipeg’s archives. Some are related to people, some to space, and some to nature.

First, can you find present day photos of each of these photos we have posted? We have labelled them to help you out. Next, assess what has changed and what has remained the same?

Lastly, have the changes or the constants been important to Manitoba’s history? And to whose benefit or whose cost?

Please post your photos, podcasts, and texts! Can you find your own pair of then-and-now photos?

Teacher please send responses to manitoba150@7oaks.org by January 24th.
