I am Rebecca Harrison, currently Art Director at Gallium Studios working on a game called Proxi with the creators of 'The Sims' and 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego'. It has always been my dream to create art for video games, but I never thought it would be a reality. After finishing High School, I got an undergraduate degree in Biology, followed by a diploma of Dental Hygiene, which I had assumed I would do for the rest of my life. Privately, however, I continued to learn and grow as an artist. I first began working in 3D as a way to create backgrounds more easily in my 2D art. Improving steadily, I eventually landed a part-time job as a 3D Prop/Environment Texture Artist at Tangent Animation, a local 3D Film Studio. It was then I became a part of the Winnipeg game developer scene, participating in local and international Game Jams for which I achieved several top-3 global rankings in Art/Graphics. Motivated by this, I began participating in more online 3D art contests, one of which was run by Gallium Studios. I won the Grand Prize, which was a trip to meet the team in San Francisco. In the end, they hired me and I have been able to work remotely for them ever since. Only last year was I finally able to transition to a full-time art career, as I climbed the ranks to become an Art Director. Now I am responsible for the overall look and tone of the game, as well as the several in-house artists and contractors all over the world.
I look forward to teaching at the Tech Hub because I want to share this love of creativity and following your dreams with young people who aspire to be a part of the wild adventure that is the tech industry, just as I did.
