The choir program at Leila North is available to all students, regardless of experience or ability. Choir runs once a cycle during the timetable. The students learn to read music notes and symbols, identify different styles and cultures, and experience the joy and teamwork of working in a large musical ensemble. Two concerts, the Remembrance Day Assembly, Music Monday, Arts in the Park, and grade 8 Farewell are just a few of the performance opportunities for choir.
There are two auditioned jazz choirs at Leila North. These choirs are open to all students in grade 7 and 8 to audition. Jazz choirs focus on microphone and performance technique as well as learning both jazz and popular music in different arrangement styles. The Junior Jazz rehearses once a week after school and learns music in 2 and 3 part harmony for unchanged voices. The Senior Jazz also rehearses once a week and learns music in 3 and 4 part harmony for mixed or changed voices. Performance opportunities for the jazz choirs include caroling at various locations in December, the special sitting of Citizenship Court on Law Day in April, Arts in the Park, school concerts, and the Brandon Jazz Festival.
The pop choir runs from September to February every year. This choir is open to all students in grades 6-8 who would like to supplement their choral experience and learn more modern music and styles. The pop choir is ideal for grade 6 students who are interested in jazz choir and grade 7 and 8 students who do not have as much time to commit to the jazz choir program. Performance opportunities include caroling in December and the Winter Choir Concert. The pop choir students also have the opportunity to travel as observers to the Brandon Jazz Festival in March.
