Dear Grade Eight Families,

Did you know that in addition to the Seven Oaks School Division's three traditional high schools, there is another unique high school experience available to grade nine students? There are two Big Picture Learning High Schools in the Seven Oaks School Division, and students in the West Kildonan Collegiate and Garden City Collegiate catchment areas are invited to apply to the Seven Oaks Met School. To answer any of your questions about our award-winning school, we invite you to join us for the Seven Oaks Met School Virtual Open House on February 24th at 6pm. Our school combines challenging academic work with real-world learning and internships. The Met School works with community partners, businesses, professionals, and organization to provide opportunities for students to explore their interests and career goals directly with mentors in the real world. We are a small school of 120 students with 15 students in each advisory (classroom). You can watch a short video about our school here: https://youtu.be/OMh-WYuN8sk.

The Met School follows the Big Picture Learning β€œOne Student at a Time" philosophy based on the premise that students learn best when they are doing something they passionate about, in the real world, and actively participate in their own education. Students spend two days each week conducting informational interviews, attending shadow days, and interning with mentors to learn hand-on from people who are passionate about what they do. Met School students gain valuable workplace experience, learn first-hand in the real world, and get a more realistic view of what to expect if they pursue a career in a particular field. More information on our internship program can be found here: https://youtu.be/Tz__uAP4zDY.

Met School students also work on inquiry-based research projects throughout the year that they present to their parents and communities. They select their projects based on their own interests and conduct research through workshops, independent study, field trips, informational interviews, and their internship experiences.

All grade eight students in our catchment area will be attending virtual presentations with their homeroom teachers starting next week. Please ask your child for their thoughts after they've attended their virtual tour: West St Paul – Feb 8; Edmund Partridge – Feb 10; HC Avery – Feb 17; ESOMS –Feb 19. The Virtual Open House will be a Facebook livestream event with a Q&A follow-up. You do not need a Facebook account to access the event. The link to our Virtual Open House is: https://www.facebook.com/events/232973031840254/   Information on our application process can be found on our website: www.7oaks.org/school/themet/Apply. We will be accepting 30 new grade nine students for September 2021. Applications are due by March 5, 2021 and acceptance letters will be sent out around spring break.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Take Care,
