Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching

Events & Celebrations |

Seven Oaks School Division and Exchange Met School are proud to share that Kathryn & Jon are being named 2025 recipients of the Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching! Kathryn and Jon consistently break down barriers for their students, critically examine their teaching practices to undo colonialism where possible, and truly take a one student at a time approach. They create space for each of their learners to uncover their passions and share their gifts with the world – embracing the Indigenous concept of Mamàhtawisiwin.

Specifically, they are being recognized for the project they facilitated with their Gr. 10 students last year, In Flight: Our Black History Walk. Together they developed lesson plans and fostered collaboration across grade levels, inspired meaningful reflection on historical erasure and the importance of diverse narratives. The project’s integration of historical thinking, community connections, and public storytelling not only enriched students’ understanding but also created a lasting model of inclusive, place-based history learning. Congratulations Jon & Kathryn!
