West African Drum Circle
Classes are invited to take part in an engaging 30 minute West African Drumming workshop designed to introduce them to the vibrant musical traditions of West Africa. Each session will begin with a brief look at the history and cultural significance of the djembe, one of the region’s most iconic instruments. Students will learn how the drum has been used for centuries in ceremonies, storytelling, and community celebrations.
Participants will then explore the three fundamental djembe sounds—bass, tone, and slap—and practice how to create each one with proper technique. Once comfortable with the basics, the class will experiment with several well known traditional rhythms, experiencing firsthand how drumming brings people together through shared pulse and energy.
To finish the session, students will collaborate to create an original class rhythm, combining creativity, teamwork, and the skills they’ve learned. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to make some joyful noise!
