Emergency Preparedness

Your child’s safety is our top priority. This section provides important information about our emergency plans, including designated evacuation sites, procedures during severe weather, and guidelines for staying informed. Please ensure your contact details—home, work, and emergency numbers—are always up to date with the office so we can reach you quickly when needed.

Evacuation Site(s):

In the event of an emergency that requires leaving the school building, it’s essential for families to know where students will be relocated. Our two designated evacuation sites ensure we have safe, prepared locations to keep students secure and supervised. Sharing this information helps families understand our safety procedures and provides peace of mind, knowing where to reunite with their child if necessary.
We also practice these procedures regularly to ensure students and staff are prepared and safe at all times.

Storm Information & Weather Procedures

As we move into the winter months, please review the James Nisbet School policies regarding storm information, cold weather cutoffs, and potential cancellations.

Indoor Recess (-27°C)We value outdoor play and fresh air, but student safety is our priority.

  • The Rule: "Indoor Recess" is called when the wind chill is -27°C or colder.

  • Expectations: Students should always arrive dressed for the weather (toque, mitts, scarf, boots). If the weather is warmer than -27°C, students are expected to go outside.

  • Student Health: If your child is not well enough to participate in outdoor recess during acceptable weather, please keep them at home to rest. We do not have adequate staff supervision to allow individual children to stay indoors while their class is outside. Staff-led clubs will also be taking place at lunch and are options for students that want to stay inside.

Bus Cancellations (-45°C)Severe weather and storm information may occasionally affect transportation.

  • The Rule: School buses will not operate if the wind chill is -45°C or colder (based on the 6:00 a.m. Environment Canada reading at The Forks).

  • Schools Remain Open: Even if buses are cancelled due to cold, schools typically remain open. If you drop your child off on a cancellation day, please plan to pick them up at dismissal time.

  • Updates: Cancellation alerts are posted on the Seven Oaks School Division website and broadcast on CJOB 680 and CBC 990.

Patrols & Crossing Guards

  • -27°C to -31°C: Patrols may be on duty for shortened periods.

  • -31°C or Colder: Patrols may not be on duty at all. Please remind your children to take extra care when crossing streets during these conditions.
