June is National Indigenous History Month
June is a time to honour and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, languages, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples across Kanata and beyond. It is also an opportunity to deepen our learning, strengthen our understanding, and grow our appreciation of Indigenous perspectives, stories, teachings and knowledge systems that have shaped these lands since time immemorial and continues to guide us today.
In 2009, the House of Commons officially designated June as National Aboriginal History Month, and in 2017, the name was changed to National Indigenous History Month to reflect inclusive and respectful language.
In Seven Oaks, this month is a meaningful call to deepen our commitment to truth, education, and reconciliation. As educators and staff, we hold a responsibility to create learning environments that recognize the strength, knowledge, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, not only in June, but throughout the year.
Let us listen to stories carried through generations, uplift Indigenous voices in our classrooms and communities, and walk together on a path of understanding, respect, and relationship. This work is not just about history, it is about the future we are shaping, together.
