Multiage Classrooms
Multiage Classrooms
A multiage classroom is an environment where children of more than one grade level are grouped together for instruction. In this environment the teacher provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on each child’s individual needs and interests. Each child’s own progress and growth are used to determine what they are ready to accomplish. This philosophy recognizes that students learn and develop at different rates, just as they learn to crawl, talk, and ride a bike at different rates. Children spend two or more years with the same teacher and same core groups of classmates building on the strong relationships they form, with older students exiting at year’s end and new students joining each fall term. The curriculum rotates which allows for all students to receive instruction in all curricular areas by the end of the two-year program.
Children learn more about themselves when they interact with friends of all ages. They also extend their school community to include more peers. Multiage classrooms help reduce the stress of your child moving to a new classroom at the beginning of each school year. In a multiage classroom, your child will already know many of their classmates, be familiar with classroom routines and the expectations of their teacher. Research has shown that students in multi-age classrooms do as well or better academically than their peers in single grade classrooms, have a more positive attitude towards school and are more easily adaptable to changing social situations. We believe strongly in the many benefits of multiage learning at École Mino Pimatisiwin and embrace this philosophy at all levels of learning.
