The Seven Oaks School Division's Indigenous Cultural Education Course ("Cultural Credit") was created to help strengthen the connection between Indigenous youth, the teachings of their families and communities, and their experiences as students in our schools. Running throughout school year and summer programming, it provides cultural learning opportunities for Indigenous students in grades 9 -12 from our 6 divisional high schools. Once a month, each school group is invited to join Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and teachers outside the classroom to learn about ceremony, identity, belonging, responsibility, and purpose – following the idea of “Leaving to Learn opportunities.” Examples of monthly activities can include:

  • Ice Fishing
  • Sweat Lodge Ceremonies, pipe ceremonies
  • Traditional Harvesting (rabbits, fish, deer, geese, etc.)
  • Hide work / tanning
  • Medicine Picking & harvesting
  • Mother Earth Teachings and Connecting to the Land at Aki Centre
  • Tipi teachings
  • Ribbon skirt/shirt making
  • REDTalks community leader presentations
  • Post Secondary Opportunities for Indigenous Students
  • Indigenous Leadership/Mentorship Building
  • Indigenous Youth Gathering Celebration
