Albert Collicutt (1890-1952)

Albert Hedley Collicutt was born at Manchester, England, on April 9, 1890. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 with his parents, William G. Collicutt and Barbara Collicutt, along with his 5 siblings. They settled in the West Kildonan area of Winnipeg.

Albert became a master plumber and actively served on the West Kildonan Municipal Council from 1930 to 1945. He became a member of St. Anne's Anglican Church where he took on various roles. He also was a parochial director of the Brothers of St. Andrews, former master of the Seven Oaks Lodge No. 148, and was the treasurer of the Master Plumbers' Association.

It is said Albert tirelessly worked to improve each the communities he was a part of.

During World War I, Collicutt served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force within the 6th Field Engineers. He married his wife, Emily, in 1919 in Manchester before returning home to Winnipeg. They had three children together: Marjorie, Eileen, and Albert.

In the 1930's his business Goodman & Collicutt Plumbing & Heating fell victim to the Depression. As a result he started his own business that operated out of a building on his property on Perth Avenue. The small Model T truck with "Collicutt Plumbing & Heating" on the side became a familiar sight around West Kildonan.

Albert passed away at the Grace Hospital on May 25, 1952 at the age of 62. A memorial plaque can be seen in St. Anne's Anglican Church in honour of his work there.

A portrait of Albert (right) hangs in the library of Collicutt School, along with a two page biography (listed below).
