For the third straight school year (2012-2013) in a row, students at Elwick were given the opportunity to be part of a drumming group led by one of our own Elwick teachers’, Richelle Scott. This drum and singing group meets at lunch hour and they are learning how to play and sing traditional Cree, Anishinable and Dakota songs.
In its first year, students were able to be a part of a deer hide drum making session on January 31, 2012, to create drums for our school. The students then feasted the drums on February 8, 2012 and learned some of the teachings around creating a feast plate to put out on the land and how to properly offer tobacco. Skirts were also purchased for the drumming group.
This year, the drumming group meets every Wednesday at lunch.
