Cold Weather Advisory
Cold Weather Information
Please keep the following cold weather information on hand for quick reference regarding transportation/bussing and outdoor recess.
School Buses: During the winter months, transportation services may be cancelled due to inclement weather and/or adverse road conditions. School buses will not operate when the Environment Canada reading taking at the Forks is -45C or colder with the windchill (as of 6:00 am). Schools remain open, parents will be responsible for making arrangements to get children to and from school. If you think that weather conditions are such that there may be a cancellation, please listen to CJOB 680 or CBC 990 on the radio.
Indoor Recess: R.F. Morrison School uses -27C or colder (Environment Canada taken from the Forks) as our guide for indoor recess. We thank you for your support in dressing your child appropriately for our Winnipeg winter temperatures. If your child is not well enough to go outside when the temperature is colder but above -27C, we ask that you please keep them home to rest. We unfortunately do not have adequate supervision to keep individual children inside.
Polar Bear Club
This winter at Школа R.F. Morrison School we will be having a Polar Bear Club. Polar Bear Club is a program that allows students to continue to have outdoor recess in cold temperatures. Many schools across Canada offer this opportunity when the temperature drops to between -27℃ and -40 C. Students in the Polar Bear Club will be given the opportunity to have a short outdoor recess period. This period will be supported and supervised by teachers and EAs. Students will have the opportunity to come back inside at any time and join their peers in their classrooms. If the temperature goes below -40℃, all students will stay inside. To determine indoor or outdoor recess, we use the Environment Canada website, at the Forks: https://weather.gc.ca/en/location/index.html?coords=49.889,-97.129 To participate students must have verbal consent from a parent or guardian. Students must also be appropriately dressed including: Toque/Winter Jacket/Gloves/Mitts/Snow Pants/Winter Boots/Scarf/Neck Warmer (Highly Recommended)/Dressing in layers in also recommended.
Patrols & Crossing Guards
-27°C to -31°C: Patrols may be on duty for shortened periods.
-31°C or Colder: Patrols may not be on duty at all. Please remind your children to take extra care when crossing streets during these conditions.
