June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to honour the history, heritage, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. It is an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions, and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples, whose presence on this land stretches back to time immemorial and continues to shape the fabric of Canada today.
In 2009, the House of Commons officially designated June as National Aboriginal History Month, and in 2017, the name was changed to National Indigenous History Month to reflect inclusive and respectful language.
In Seven Oaks, this month is a meaningful call to deepen our commitment to truth, education, and reconciliation. As educators and staff, we hold a responsibility to create learning environments that recognize the strength, knowledge, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, not only in June, but throughout the year.
Let us listen to stories carried through generations, uplift Indigenous voices in our classrooms and communities, and walk together on a path of understanding, respect, and relationship. This work is not just about history, it is about the future we are shaping, together.
