Safe & Caring Schools
The Seven Oaks School Division is committed to supporting students, staff, and the community by ensuring safe, respectful, and purposeful learning environments. Effective learning environments are established when students understand their roles and responsibilities as members of the Seven Oaks School Division.
Safe and caring school environments are free from acts of:
- Bullying (including cyberbullying), harassment, threat, and intimidation
- Violence of any form
- Verbal or written, physical, or sexual abuse
- Discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, or age
- Theft and vandalism
The following will not be tolerated on school sites:
- Using, possessing, or being under the influence of alcohol, cannabis (marijuana) or illicit drugs
- Gang involvement
- Possessing a weapon, as ‘weapon’ is defined as anything that is used or intended to be used for causing harm or for threatening or intimidating someone.
Students will adhere to our cellphone guidelines, as follows:
- Kindergarten – Grade 8: Students will not be permitted to use or access cellphones during the school day, including breaks and lunch. All students are required to leave their cellphones at home, in their bag, or locker during the school day.
- Grade 9 -12: Access and use of cellphones will not be permitted during class time. Use of cellphones is permitted during breaks/lunch as well as for educational purposes when directed by classroom teachers.
- Kindergarten – Grade 12: Students with specific educational or medical needs outlined in Student Specific Plans will have access to cellphones as necessary.
- Staff: Staff may use cell phones for instructional purposes or as directed by administration to support the overall operation of the school. Personal cell phone use is limited to breaks and lunch periods. Staff with medical needs or emergencies that require cell phone use are required to inform administration to ensure exceptions are handled appropriately while maintaining overall cellphone guideline consistency.
Should a situation arise within the Seven Oaks School Division, appropriate action will be taken to support the individuals involved and those affected. When working with students, the Principal or Vice Principal may adjust the action based on the maturity, grade level, and individual needs and circumstances of those involved. A range of actionable items may include but are not limited to:
- Conversation with a Principal or Vice Principal
- Notification of parent(s)/guardian(s)
- Consultation with school teams, divisional support teams, and senior leadership teams
- Restorative processes
- Consultation with community resources as needed (e.g., SRO, Child Advocate, CFS)
- Alternative in and out of school planning and programming
- Referral to external support programs
Learning from and with each other fosters a sense of belonging and safety while creating an environment that celebrates the diversity of our learners. This shared responsibility involves students, staff, and the community.
