TECHNOLOGY, ARTS, AND SPORTS (T.A.S.)

​Technology, Arts, and Sports is part of the curriculum at H.C. Avery. These programs may include woodworking, electronics, foods and nutrition, textiles, multimedia and web design, soccer, metals, and theatre arts. The purpose of our T.A.S. program is to provide students with a variety of experiences over numerous fields.  Avery students attend T.A.S. classes for one half day a cycle at Garden City Collegiate, H. C. Avery Middle School, and Garden City Community Centre.

The 7 Oaks Hockey Skills Academy at West Kildonan Arena (Full Hockey Equipment required Terms 1 & 2)
Term 1 and Term 2 on-ice (2 hrs on-ice, full equipment, skill practices)
Term 3 off-ice (ball hockey using full ball hockey Manitoba rules & Sports Conditioning)

Indoor Soccer at Garden City Soccer Complex
Indoor Soccer is a program that focuses on the basic skills, rules and knowledge required for indoor soccer success.  Each session will be based on a specific theme or skill.  These skills will be introduced and developed through a variety of lead-up games and drills.  Themes or skills include:  dribbling/ball control, trapping/passing/receiving, shooting/kicking, heading, goalkeeping, shielding, team tactics etc.  Skilled veterans or novices benefit from and can experience success and fitness through this program.

Outdoor Ed – only available in Term 1 off site

Enjoy the great outdoors while getting active!  Explore nature and see what you're made of by joining us in activities that may include hiking adventures at Birds Hill Park, Orienteering explorations using GPS navigators, and horseback riding – just to name a few!  Don't miss this opportunity to experience the FUN of Physical Activity!

Swimming & Watersports – only available in Term 2 off site
Explore swimming on a whole new level!  Want to improve your swimming skills?  Start with the basics to find tune your swim strokes/learn new skills!  You'll get a chance to explore water safety, participate in water aerobics, and get an introduction to water polo and synchronized swimming!  Don't forget your towel!

Active Living – only available in Term 3 off site
Come experience the FUN of physical activity outside of the gym!  In this class we take the emphasis off of team sports, and focus on individual sports and activities you can adopt as a part of a lifelong active lifestyle- the emphasis being activities that are FUN!  These can include biking, inline skating/rollerblading, Golf, Yoga, and Aerobics- just to name a few.  Find out what the world of physical activity really has to offer!
 
Skating – available in Term 1 and 2 at West Kildonan Arena
This program is designed for students who want to learn how to skate, or would like to improve their skating ability.  The main emphasis is having fun rather than a serious training routine.  Students will be skating at an indoor facility with some outings to the Forks River Trail and other outdoor locations.  This program will consist of skating with friends, drills, and games on skates such as low organized games, sponge hockey, ringette, etc. Skates & helmets will be provided.

Clothing and Textiles at Garden City Collegiate
Students will learn to use commercial patterns in making two to three projects. The sewing machine, serger, and the embroidery machine will be used extensively. Students will learn how fabrics are made, the characteristics of various fibres, and how to care for their clothes.

Electronics at Garden City Collegiate
This course is designed to place a strong emphasis on electrical safety, electronic principles, problem solving, the integration of subject materials, and career explorations. The Electronics program will focus on the following areas of study; student orientation and safety, tools related to Electricity/Electronics, soldering techniques, DC theory, AC theory, passive components, active components, power supplies, audio circuits, printed circuits, and residential wiring.

Foods and Nutrition at Garden City Collegiate
This program will assist students in learning about nutrition for the growing adolescent. Students will be participating in food labs, which emphasize healthful meal planning, preparation, and presentation of food.

​Graphics at Garden City Collegiate
This class is an introduction to the exciting and constantly changing field of graphic arts. Students are exposed to the basics of graphic design through exploring design elements and principles. There will be several presentations, demos, and projects.

Dramatic Arts at Garden City Collegiate
In Dramatic Arts, students will tap into their imaginations and bring characters to life in a variety of creative situations.  Students will actively participate in warm up games and activities, improvisation and character development exercises, and will explore a number of fun acting techniques such as improvisation, mime, story theatre, musical theatre, puppetry, short scenes and scripts. Whether you're shy or the class clown, Dramatic Arts will build your confidence and skills.
